SHAMAN WEARS NIKE

2020 - 2018

Uncovering the matriarchal society of the Khasi tribe in India was literally an initiating moment for me; my soul and inner space took a new direction. I was honored by the opportunity to participate in the ritual “Ringu Soitiap” dedicated to soul wellbeing of the deceased grandmother of the Wanniang family. After sacrificing the hen, we learned from the intestines that grandmother is well and her soul is peaceful.
Since then I know, that the Shaman Wears Nike.

BECOMING ANIMAL

2018

Becoming Animal was a two day land-art workshop with children and youth of village Jakrem in Khasi Hills in India. Inspired by local Khasi legends and mythologies, we installed a mythical character of Rangmaw, the man, who became a tiger during his pilgrimage to Shillong city. During the workshop we outlined a huge (13 * 4 meter) figure in sand depicting a human with claws and an animal head. We used the natural local materials from the area; stones, sand, leaves and wood to fill out and decorate the figure. As we outlined, filled and decorated the figure we encouraged the children regularly to step up to the hillside to help them with the navigation and perspective of the piece. We relate, depend and correspond to nature by using installing material from local natural resources.

I would like to sincerely thank the Khasi tribe people from Meghalaya for introducing me to their culture.

My deepest gratitude belongs to my dear friend Arrowstar Archer Wanning and to the Wanniang family, whose strong sense of community and unwavering hospitality have shown me the true meaning of connection and empathy. Through rich folklore, music, and dance, the Khasi tribe has ignited a passion for storytelling and sparked a newfound appreciation for the power of cultural heritage. I will forever cherish the memories and experiences shared at the artist residency Artist’s Point, which had a profound impact on my life.
